The Eugene School District and the track-resurfacing contractor are already moving ahead with plans to reorder the damaged materials and continue with the track resurfacing in a few weeks.
Sheldon Athletic Director Matt Binkerd has started the process of ordering new Pole vault pits that will replace the old ones that burned in the fire.
The new Gill high-jump pits we purchased this summer after the NCAA National Championships were not damaged, and are now safely stored off campus in dry and secure location.
Investigation into the cause of the fire continues. If you or anyone you know has any information, call Eugene Police at 541-682-5111. The school district has plans to improve campus security including the installation of cameras.
As Hayward Field becomes more of a national and international venue for track, TrackTown USA needs another complete track and field facility that will serve youth, high school, college, elite and community participants for competitions and training. For nearly 2 years a dedicated group of supporters have analyzed the need, evaluated the options, drawn the plans, and organized the effort.
Now it’s time to start making it happen with donations. Friends of Sheldon Community Track is a non-profit fundraising organization. Your donation is tax-deductible. There are big plans and big goals for the complete facility. But it starts with the first phase, to re-build and replace the track surface as soon as possible.
